good day,

i am testing this nice product and it seems to work quite well for my requirements. however, there is something missing.

i need to be able to copy the category tree. further, it's better if in copying the tree, I can copy the gkb documents and topics inside as well.

I have a requirement to keep track of resolutions on findings in weekly log reviews. so I am categorizing by week, then by log report (say, 17 of them. windows active directory, linux successful root access etc etc.). so there is a maximum of 17 subcategories under 1 parent category which is the report week (say, 01 August 2010 - 07 August 2010).

so i hope you get it, that I need to replicate the tree every report week. it's gonna be tedious to keep on creating the tree every week.

thanks

Hi,

GeneralKB is really a great piece of software. I have searched a long time to find something like it.
I'm just starting to explore the many possibilities of it.
One thing I don't seem to find is to have relative link paths.
If I insert a file in the database, its link is something like c:/directory/subdirectory/filename.ext.
Now I want to move my database and all its associated files to a different drive, but then the
database doesn't find the file anymore. What I want to do is something like ../subdirectory/filename.ext
where the .. is the directory where I put my database. So it would be no problem to move everything from
c:/directory to for example d:/dir1/dir2.
I know you can insert the file directly in the database but because it concerns sometimes many video fragments
of several tens of Mb, the database file immediately becomes immense. Therefore I prefer links to files.
Is there a way out ?

Many thanks !

Most windows programs allow starting a program together with a file. In GKB 2.6 it seems that the function is not available (the contained help file is from the totally other product (refer to "Database manager ever starts with same database", Forum entry) GKB 2.4 and does not contain any hint on it - but there it worked fine).
So I would like to start GKB using
generalkb.exe "C:\MyGKBFiles\MyDatabase.gkb"
Would be fine if it would be available before I have to pay for the next bugfix release.

Congratulations: PDF viewer is within GeneralKB now. This is a very nice feature !!!

But: The viewer at least needs a search dialog (like GKB document editor) to find text in the current document.

And, of course, the database search should also find text in embedded documents, especially PDF and HTML - because this is the main feature of GKB. Otherwise it does not make too much sense to store documents inside the database.

I'm sure, this is already on the list for the next release.

Problem #1 WebCapter plugin for Firefox installs fine. However, there's no KBWebCapture.exe that has been installed into the Program directory. In fact, there's no KBWebCapture*.* in the installation directory which is where the plugin is looking. On my Vista, it's c:\Program Files (x86)\GeneralKB 2.5.

I can't see where to download the necessary .exe from your web site and it's obviously not in the installer any place, so what I did was take the KBWebCapture.exe and .dll from a 2.4 install and placed those two files into the installation directory for version 2.5. Now the plugin doesn't fail because there's no .exe to execute but now I have ...

Problem #2 With the transplanted WebCapture utility files (exe & dll), the Capture program always crashes with "Exception EAbort in module KBWebCapture.exe at 00055AFC".

So, at the end of the day, WebCapture isn't working for me on Vista 64 bit using GeneralKB 2.5.

PDF viewer not quite like Adobe viewer (4 replies)

With the new version 2.5, I noticed that, for whatever reason, a few files that I'd like to include into the database, either as linked or embedded, don't always display in the viewer as they do in Adobe Reader. There's one file in particular (an ebook) that has annotations and hyperlinks that really doesn't work so well in the GKB viewer, whereas in the Adobe reader, it displays fine. In the GKB viewer, portions of the text get blacked out so that it's not at all useful. The internal viewer is very useful for most PDF files, but not for all of them. Since 100% compatibility likely wasn't the objective, it's not a really big deal, so this is mostly a FYI type post.

One other thing, while I'm here. It would be nice if the user could change the font size in the navigating tree and the topics list. With the larger screens and larger resolutions, everything seems to be getting smaller and smaller and harder to see as I'm getting older. Perhaps there's a lesson here.

The help file says there is a database that automatically loads up when you first open the software, but when I downloaded the software, I had to create a new database first before I could view a working database. For a novice, this would be discouraging because they do not know that they first have to create a database before they can test the software.

I did find the example database after looking in the installation folder and adding it to my list in the Database Manager, but this is asking too much of a new user. It would be better to connect to this automatically than revise the help file to tell them how to make a new database in Getting Started heading.

Hello,

Until recently, we used client/server version 2.4 for demo purposes (evaluation version)

After purchase of GeneralKB, we immediately started with client/server version 2.5. Unfortunately, we cannot use hyperlinks that point to other topics or categories in the database. Each time, we get an error message similar to "Cannot navigate to gkb://category.21999". In the trial version 2.4, this worked fine.

Hyperlinks to external documents (i.e. absolute hyperlinks containing full path)

Two questions:

Do you have any ideas on how to resolve this problem?

Alternatively, would it possible to define links containing the full path that point to categories/topics inside the same DB. Where does GKB typically store the data, in a separate folder?

Thank you for your feedback.

Hi!

I'm evaluating GeneralKB for a procedure-manual application. I must be not understanding some things, though,

1. I have created a database but when creating the first-level nodes on the tree the application seems to position the nodes rather unpredictably. And I cannot seem to make the drag-and-drop work: I try to move the node and get the confirmation dialogue, but I can only move the nodes into other categories; I cannot seem to change the position of nodes in the first level.

2. Once the nodes are created, I cannot change the names -- even to correct a simple typo.

What am I missing?
